Star Trek is all about the exploring - seeing what's out there - seeking out new life, and new civilizations. It's exciting work, but sometimes in any occupation, boredom can grip a crew. Since all work and no play make Starfleet officers dull sorts, thankfully, there is more than enough diversions to enjoy. Starship duty is challenging both mentally and physically, so both humans and aliens have fun playing games. This goes for humans, Klingons, Romulans, Bajorans, Cardassians - the list goes on and on. How about the Borg? Well, they always have virtual games I suppose. Sports and games are a large part of Gene Roddenberry's universe.
Before the marvelous holodeck on Captain Picard's Enterprise, Kirk and crew had their gym and tridimensional chess matches. Bottom line: the Star Trek universe, while being serious and philosophical, is also all about having fun - while engaging in all of that serious play.
